The Only Way has some one of Lake's better sets of lyrics, and flows perfectly into Infinite Space, which is a great performance. After that it goes downhill, A Time And A Place isn't that memorable and Are You Ready Eddy is a waste. Overall, a good album with a few great moments (one of which takes up the entire first side). 8//5.

After this interlude Emerson remains at the piano, playing a variation of the opening theme while Lake leaves the church alone to glorify man's freewill. Since the church organ is an essential part of the song's message, "The Only Way (Hymn)" was not performed live. Eclipsed by the epic suite "Tarkus," it remained a half-forgotten song.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer's eponymous LP was only a rehearsal. It hit hard because of the novelty of the act (allegedly the first supergroup in rock history), but felt more like a collection of individual efforts and ideas than a collective work.
